Sports enthusiasts watched sports’ history unfold recently when Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu stopped Serena Williams in straight sets to win the US

Open Grand Slam title. In your opinion, has this young teenager managed to raise her notoriety and status in Canadian sports to the levels of a Wayne Gretzky
or Sidney Crosby?

Gilles Gaudet - Sports Enthusiast - Like many of you, I’ve watched about as much women’s tennis as I did professional bull riding until Bianca came onto
the scene, first at the Canadian Open and then the US Open. Then we couldn’t get enough of Bianca. Bianca is a phenom, but like all phenoms Bianca has to
add continued success and longevity to her resume to attain the status that Gretzky and Crosby have achieved. You only have to look at recent Canadian tennis

history to realize that greatness can be fleeting. In 2014 Genie Bouchard had what many would consider a better year on the WTA tour than Bianca’s whirlwind
2019. During 2014 Genie went to the finals at Wimbledon, semi-finals of the French and Australian Opens and to the 4th round of the US Open. She was the

world (ironically that’s the same number as Bianca’s present ranking) to her present 149th ranking. Don’t feel sorry for Bouchard though, her career earnings
in tennis alone have brought her a little over 6 million dollars in revenue. In fact you’re more likely to see Bouchard in a Sports Illustrated magazine than on a

tennis court. To achieve the status of Gretzky or Crosby, Andreescu will probably have to dominate the tennis world for the next ten years or so. She’ll need to
win a few more Grand Slam titles, Wimbledon included, and probably about 20 other WTA titles. She’s an incredible story, a talented athlete, and exactly what
tennis in Canada needed to propel the sport to new heights. She still a long way off from being considered a Canadian sports icon, let’s hope that she’s successful
in maintaining her incredible 2019.

Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - Earlier this year very few Canadians recognized the name “Bianca Andreescu”; a young tennis player from Mississauga

her poise and charm with fans and the respect towards fellow athletes skyrocketed her popularity in Canada and around the world. She truly has become an
inspiration to many Canadians, especially an inspiration to young Canadians by demonstrating that young people can do anything. Her win in New York made her

a national hero, and her final against Serena attracted record TV audiences on TSN and RDS as she elevated the game of tennis in Canada to eclipse hockey for a
full month; what an accomplishment! Has this young teenager managed to raise her popularity and status in Canadian sports to the levels of a Wayne Gretzky or

Sidney Crosby? Bianca has certainly carved her name in stone in Canadian Tennis history and sits amongst some great Canadian sports figures; the names Gretzky
and Crosby are iconic because of their talent and the longevity of their success.

Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club -Bianca Andreescu has made her presence known on the Women’s Tennis Circuit. In January she won her first WTA title at
Newport Beach and followed up by winning another at Indian Wells. On August 11th in Toronto, Andreescu won the Rogers’ Cup, becoming the first Canadian

in fifty years to do so. Less than one month later she defeated Serena Williams in the final to capture the US Open title. Just three years into her professional
career Andreescu is now ranked #5 in the world by the WTA. Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, who played for 19 and 17 years professionally, are considered
two of the greatest hockey players of all time. Together they dominate the NHL record books with Gretzky still holding sixty NHL records twenty years after his
retirement. Their status is so great that they each

Arena in Pittsburgh. Bianca Andreescu is a very talented athlete who has some very significant accomplishments, but she will have to continue to play at this
level for many more years before she reaches the status of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.
