ummer presents a training challenge for most martial artists. With family

is often little, or no time left, for the martial arts. Honestly, most of us would
R T I N A T C N E D I M A N U E rather be sitting on our decks, out for a bicycle ride, or almost anywhere outside
rather than sweating it out in class. At Seaway Karate, we go to a reduced

schedule during July and August of one class per week, each Tuesday, at the
L S A A T R E L A S C Y K C V T South Stormont Community Hall in Long Sault, at 6:30 p.m.
At our last class in June, we always provide a half dozen or so drills to our
E S N C B S P E L F G U S I C N group that they may want to consider working on during the summer. These
drills are fun, innovative, take no more than a minute or two, and most can be
E S L T K H L R R Y F F K H B A practiced alone and will help to maintain, or even improve, present skills. For
the drills that we are looking at here, the only thing needed is a tennis ball. The

squeezing and gripping of the ball will be at full arm extension.
S A T N N M R L B G N R O V X A 1) Chin tuck drill – take a fighting stance, placing the tennis ball under the
left side of your chin, trapping it between your chin and left shoulder for an
J I S E S I A S S G G W E Y K F orthodox stance, (between chin and right shoulder for a southpaw stance,) and
shadow box, utilizing jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts, and elbow strikes. This
H D S Y X G D T S E N F D I F O drill will help to ingrain keeping the chin tucked as well as proper technique.
Lifting the chin or overreaching on certain strikes and the tennis ball will fall.

drop the ball, catching it with your fully extended right. Lower your fully
extended right to the level of your solar plexus, then drop it, catching with
your left. Lower the fully extended left to waist level, drop the ball and catch
with the right. These three levels are one rep. Either do two sets of twenty-five
reps, or one – two minute round. Speed, focus, power, timing, balance, and co-
ordination are the necessary attributes for proficiency in karate.
619 Pitt Street, Cornwall Practicing and working on these six drills will help to develop all six of those
necessary attributes.
