A nyone who has ever been involved with any sport at any level will
vouch how their sport is a “small community” or
“like family”. I’ve been fortunate to have
experienced that with multiple sports,
including hockey, baseball/fastball,
boxing, and racing.
Some people are even lucky enough
to meet their childhood sports idols.
I’ve been fortunate to be one of
these people. I can proudly say
that I’ve sat down and had a beer
with Ray Sheppard, Doug Gilmour,
Guy Lafleur, Gerry Cooney, and
Larry Holmes. I’ve had the chance
to interview Wayne Gretzky, Doug
Carlyle, and Bill Lee. I’ve met
Roberto Alomar, Ricky Henderson, and
Mario Lemieux.
That’s why the news of Dale Hawerchuk,
Hall of Famer and former Cornwall Royals
captain, being diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2019 hits close to home.
He put up a great fight and won a round with his final treatment earlier
this year. But, unfortunately, the ugly disease is rearing its head again
prompting the hashtag #Hawerchukstrong.
The name Dale Hawerchuk means a lot of things to a lot of people across
the hockey world and beyond. He’s a big reason why Cornwall residents
can brag about back-to-back Memorial Cup championships, putting us
on the hockey map forever!!! He singlehandedly brought respect to the
floundering Winnipeg Jets franchise as an 18-year-old phenom in 1981.
If not for two guys named Gretzky and Lemieux, Hawerchuk would be
in the pantheon of all-time greatest players. It was Hawerchuk who won
the faceoff, pushed the puck to Lemieux who then worked a give-and-
