The Rideau Lakes Cycling Tour with Tom Everson
By Christine Ouellet
om Everson completed the
T244 km Rideau Lakes Cycle
Tour over two days: Perth-
Kingston in approximately five
hours on the first day and the
following day, Kingston-Perth.
Tom Everson moved from
Montreal in 1972 and grew up in
Bainsville until he got married.
He lived in Cornwall from 1990
to 2003 when he moved to
BeaverGlen, a subdivision in the
Long Sault area.
The “Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour”
is hosted by the Ottawa Bicycle
Club. This year’s ride was the
51st edition. It started in 1972
when a few students rode from
Carleton University in Ottawa to
Queen’s University in Kingston.
The Cornwall Cycle Club has
had members participate many
times over the years.
The Cornwall Club does not
host an event as large or complex
as the Rideau Tour. But the
Cornwall Cycle Club has a fairly
full calendar of events weekly
for the whole riding season. He
says: “We have events scheduled
for Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursdays after work. Saturday
is our busiest day, when we often
have three events at different
times, speeds, and distances.
We often end the week with a
ride on Sunday morning. We
are very fortunate to have great
roads with bike lanes that are
well maintained by the different
municipalities (Cornwall and
SD&G).”
