South Branch Garage presents
“Game On” in South Glengarry
Meet our Athletes
Wyatt Zimmer
Grade: 12
School: Char-Lan District High School
Wyatt Zimmer, this month’s Game On athlete, has always had
an interest in sports, but his passion is baseball. “My number
one sport has always been baseball. But I do enjoy playing other
sports like volleyball, basketball, and soccer. I’m a big rugby fan
and would love to give that a go one day,” he explains.
Wyatt currently plays for the 18U Ottawa Knights AAA Baseball
Club as a left and center fielder and a right-handed pitcher. Over
the March Break, the team traveled to Florida to play against
college sponsored teams from various states as part of their
spring training program. During the league season, the team will
play others from Vermont, Quebec, NY state, and Toronto.
Wyatt explains that traveling to different places is one of the
positives of playing sports. “But the best part of playing sports
as a teen or a kid is the bonding that comes with it. You make
good friends and some of those friendships will be lifelong.”
Having played several years of competitive baseball while growing up, Wyatt has many great memories,
but there is one that stands out in his mind. “My best memory is from when I played for the Cornwall River
Rats. The team made the newspaper because we came back from being down 11 late in the game to win
our home tournament.”
Thinking about athletes or sports personnel who are inspirational, Wyatt doesn’t hesitate to choose Fred
VanVleet. “I’m a huge underdog fan. VanVleet went undrafted and was overlooked because of his size.
Now he is an NBA all-star.”
As a Grade 12 student, Wyatt is currently busy finishing up his schooling and preparing for his post-
secondary path. “I hope to pursue a career in law enforcement and join the RCMP as a police officer. I’m
thinking of heading to Carleton next year.”
As hectic as life can be for him, Wyatt still finds time to do some of his favourite down-time things. “When
I have spare time, I like to go out with friends, work out, or just relax behind a TV.”
